About Sleeping Beauty

Jasper Conran’s designs for Galina Samsova’s 1994 production of Sleeping Beauty break away from the traditions of classical ballet and the pink tutu. In striking shades his costumes take the old story in to another realm. Each act adds to the last in its level of vibrancy, beginning with the fairies who bring exotic dashes of colour to a stylised black and white court, through to the intensely brilliant oranges, greens and blues of the courtiers in the final scene.

Inspiration from the Elizabethan period forms the backdrop to the designs with vast panniered court dresses alongside tutu’s with beautifully layered skirts echoing the sentiments of an aristocratic knot garden.
