About Maria Stuarda
Jasper Conran designed more than 100 costumes for the English National Opera’s production of Maria Stuarda. Based on Schiller’s play, the opera is a take on the relationship between Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots with a tale of sex, glamour and power. The contrast between the two women’s characters is cleverly conveyed by their different attire. Mary wears flowing tactile velvet whilst Elizabeth’s costumes display a sharp, angular silhouette.
