LFW SS12: JASPER CONRAN TALKS ABOUT HIS SS12 SHOW AND THE IMPORTANCE OF LONDON FASHION WEEK.

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

What is the aesthetic for Jasper Conran SS12?

It is very much about my own roots and what I love to do; which is quite simple, architectural lines. Strangely, that’s the most difficult thing to do – so my workroom tell me! This is because you can’t afford for anything to be out of kilter or line. You’re not stuffing a bit of fur on something or sequins, it has to be pure.

What is the inspiration for the collection?

It is very much about beach life – healthy, outdoors, sporty and elegant in a very ‘30’s way. But it’s absolutely not about vintage.

When do you start planning the concept for a season?

I start a couple of weeks before this [the Jasper Conran SS12 catwalk show] has ended, so I’m already ticking on the next one. I’m working on what kind of shapes I want for next season.

Why is London Fashion Week so important for British fashion?

British fashion and London Fashion Week are very important culturally for this country. Fashion really is such a big part of what goes on on the streets of every city now. It’s a cultural expression and one which we do particularly well. I think what’s interesting is there are so many different aspects to London Fashion Week; there’s a student aspect and a grown-up ‘me’ aspect, and then there’s everything else in between. That’s what differentiates London from Milan, Paris and New York, we have fashion from the streets right up to the dinner table.

You are live streaming the Jasper Conran SS12 show for the first time this season on Jasperconran.com, why is this important to do?

I’ve always liked the idea of everyone seeing the show at one time. It’s very exciting and hugely positive - the fact that you’re interacting with people who are interested in your work. We can only show it to 600 people here at Somerset House, but in the comfort of your own home you can come to my show – fabulous!
