INSPIRATION IN PHOTOGRAPHY

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Photography is a continual source of inspiration for the Jasper Conran studio team. Each season, as we come together to brainstorm concepts and discuss ideas for the fashion and homewares collections, we look to photography for creative and visual stimulation.

When looking for inspiring photography we source images from the internet, books, magazines, auction houses, art galleries, markets and also from what we’ve taken ourselves. This includes looking at contemporary and vintage photographers, which can help convey a certain mood or idea.

This week marks the launch of Paris Photo 2011(the annual photography exhibition which brings together 117 galleries from some 23 countries to showcase a selection of outstanding photographic work). The event - which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year - takes place at the Grand Palais in Paris from the 10-13th November.

To co-incide with Paris Photo, auction houses will be holding sales of work by iconic photographers, including Irving Penn and Henri Cartier-Bresson. On November 11th, Christie’s in Paris will auction off 100 photographs by French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson which cover his travels, portraits and also scenes of everyday life. On 12th November, over 50 images taken by American photographer Irving Penn will be put up for auction - including fashion photographs, portraits, still-life and travel.

Irving Penn’s flower images are some of Jaspers favourites, many of which form the celebrated book ‘Flowers’. If you are a fan of Irving Penn, the National Portrait Gallery in London has a collection of 23 of his portraits on show.
