Florist at showstudio
Tuesday, November 16th, 2010
Since British fashion photographer Nick Knight launched his pioneering website SHOWstudio ten years ago, many have followed in his digital fashion footsteps. Now, as SHOWstudio blossoms into its tenth year, Knight and his team have invited past collaborators to ‘say it with flowers’ and create a fitting floral tribute to the site as part of their newest exhibition: Florist. As well as marking an important milestone in the website’s history, Florist aims to explore the traditions of still life, and how the simple, natural beauty of flowers is as disarming and affecting as ever.
With the contributor list reading like a who’s who of the fashion and art world, it is inevitable that the brief has been interpreted in a myriad of ways. From Michael Howells’ elaborate Georgia O’Keefe-esque sculpture, originally made for Dior couture, to a typically racy photograph by Guy Bourdin to a projection of Knight’s 2008 film ‘Flowers for Kate’, the artworks are as diverse as the names creating them. In true SHOWstudio style, a further list of collaborators will be filmed creating new works for the exhibition live on the site. Watch as the exhibition grows over the winter months until it comes to full fruition in the spring.
Florist is open to the public until January 13th 2011 at the SHOWstudio Shop, 1-9 Bruton Place, London
