History and location

The history of Sackville Street

The flagship store at 36 Sackville Street occupies one of London’s finest postcodes in the heart of Mayfair. It is just a stone’s throw from Fortnum and Mason, the Royal Academy of Arts and Saville Row.

During its heyday in the 18th century, the street already attracted the well-dressed who visited the fine gentlemen’s tailors that had established themselves here.

It was a wealthy Lincolnshire gentleman, Edmund Turner, who first gained permission to build what was to become ‘the House of Jasper Conran’ in 1732. His architect Henry Flitcroft was responsible for the fine features, typical of the Georgian period. Many still remain today, such as the fine staircase balustrades, the ornate cornicing and the elaborate doorway architrave.

Today, the original plasterwork compliments Jasper Conran’s contemporary interior. See the panelling, the plain dado and large, carved wall panels in the front room. The original drapery festoon design still sits above the door.

The sweeping principal, stone stairwell with its original wrought-iron balustrades now leads you from the drawing room to the first floor salons where the minimalist panelling forms the backdrop to the bespoke womenswear and bridal collections .
